Erwin Leder
Actor
Erwin Leder is an Austrian actor who has been one of the most distinctive character actors in European cinema since the 1970s. His career began after training at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna, where he quickly attracted attention with his precise delivery and intense stage presence. He achieved his international breakthrough with a role that made film history: as Johann in Wolfgang Petersen's “Das Boot” (1981). This made Leder the face of a new generation of Austrian actors who combined authenticity and emotional depth. In KAFKA'S THE BUILDING (2014, directed by Jochen Alexander Freydank), Leder plays the character of Penner. The film, an interpretation of Franz Kafka's unfinished novella, is characterized by its oppressive atmosphere, in which Leder plays a leading role. In ROCK ‘N’ ROLL RINGO (2019, directed by Wolfgang Murnberger), he plays Father Petrus, a character torn between faith, morality, and self-doubt. In GOLIATH96 (2018, directed by Marcus Richardt), he appears alongside Katja Riemann and once again demonstrates his ability to make a strong emotional impact even in small roles. His other important works include Angst (1983, directed by Gerald Kargl), in which he plays the lead role of a mentally disturbed murderer, as well as international productions such as Underworld (2003, directed by Len Wiseman). With these works, Leder cemented his reputation as an actor of extraordinary intensity and expressiveness. Erwin Leder has been honored for his artistic achievements with, among other awards, the City of Vienna Prize for Cinematic Art. His extensive body of work, ranging from major cinema productions to experimental projects, makes him a defining figure in Austrian film.
