Giso Weißbach (born February 16, 1940 in Chemnitz) is a German actor who became known primarily for his work in East German film and television. After training at the University of Film and Television in Potsdam-Babelsberg, he began his career on the theater stage before increasingly devoting himself to cinema and television. One of his early successes was his role in DER SCOUT (1983, directed by Konrad Petzold and Dschamjangijn Buntar), a German-Mongolian adventure film in which he played a striking supporting role. The film is part of the DEFA co-productions of the 1980s and is one of the studio's best-known international projects. He made a late but significant appearance in OSTRAVAGANZA (2022, directed by Martin Miotk). He was part of the ensemble in this experimental music film featuring former GDR stars. The work combines documentary with musical performance and brought him renewed attention in contemporary culture. In addition, Weißbach appeared in numerous television series such as Polizeiruf 110, Der Staatsanwalt hat das Wort, and DEFA fairy tale adaptations. In addition to his acting career, he also worked as a voice actor and lent his voice to international productions. Giso Weißbach received various honors for his artistic achievements, including the title of Distinguished Artist of the GDR. His versatile work over several decades makes him an important representative of German film and television, combining tradition and the present.
