Gitta Schweighöfer (born in 1954 in the former East Germany) is a renowned German actress known for her versatility in film, television, and theater. Since the 2000s, she has regularly appeared in leading roles, including appearances in TV series such as Gute Zeiten, schlechte Zeiten, Hinter Gittern, and the crime series Tatort. Her film work includes notable productions such as Friendship! (2010), in which she plays Tom's mother, and Der Rote Baron (2008), in which she plays Kunigunde von Richthofen. Gitta Schweighöfer plays the role of the mother in the avant-garde theater film ELF ONKEL (2010), directed by Herbert Fritsch. The film interprets the Hamlet saga in an expressive, surreal visual language. She also appeared in the short film GRENZE (2008), in which she plays the role of a bartender. Gitta Schweighöfer also remains connected to the theater: she was a member of the ensemble at renowned theaters such as the Thalia Theater Hamburg, the Theater Lübeck, and the Volksbühne Berlin, most recently appearing in the play Richtfest at the Renaissance Theater Berlin in 2013.
