Herbert Gropper, also known as Herbert Kline, was a prominent Austrian-American filmmaker, writer, and director, known for his socially conscious documentaries and feature films. He was born in Vienna, Austria. His work often explored themes of war, poverty, and social injustice. Some of his notable films include "Crisis", which documented the events leading up to World War II, and "Lights Out in Europe", a powerful anti-war film. He also directed "The Forgotten Village" in collaboration with John Steinbeck. Gropper's films are characterized by their realistic portrayal of human struggles and his commitment to using cinema as a tool for social change. He was married to documentary filmmaker and editor Slávka Vorkapić. He died in 1999 in Paris. He left a significant legacy in the world of documentary filmmaking.
