Nadia Fares
Director
Nadia Fares is an Egyptian-Swiss director, screenwriter, and producer known internationally for her sensitive and award-winning films. Born in Bern to an Egyptian father and a Swiss mother, she grew up between different cultures, which shapes her world-opening perspective on stories and characters. After completing a master's degree in film and television at New York University, she quickly developed her own cinematic voice. Fares began her career with award-winning short films and assisted renowned directors during her training. Her feature film debut, Honey & Ashes (1996), tells the story of three North African women who are trying to find their way in society between tradition and modernity; the work received numerous international awards and was shown at major festivals. In her work, she combines strong visual sensitivity, narrative depth, and cultural diversity. Fares has worked in various countries—including Europe, North Africa, and the US—and has established herself as one of the important voices bringing female perspectives and intercultural experiences to the forefront of cinema. In addition to feature films, she has also made documentary and formally experimental works that reflect on social, political, and human issues.
