Raymond Depardon

Born in Villefranche-sur-Saône in 1942, Raymond Depardon is an influential French photographer, journalist, and filmmaker. He began his career as a photojournalist, co-founding the Gamma agency in 1966 before becoming a member of Magnum Photos in 1978. In his cinematic work, Depardon often uses an observational style to focus on French society, the justice system, or rural life. His works include the documentary films *Délits flagrants* (1994) and *12 Jours* (2017), both of which won a César Award. His films have also been repeatedly presented at the Cannes Film Festival, such as *La Captive du désert* (1990) in competition.
