Sophie Linnenbaum, born in Nuremberg in 1986, is a German director, screenwriter, playwright, and film producer. She studied psychology at Friedrich-Alexander University in Erlangen-Nuremberg and, starting in 2013, film directing at the Film University Babelsberg. Her short film [OUT OF FRA]ME (2016, director: Sophie Linnenbaum) received the Audience Award and the prize for Best European Production at the Munich Film Festival. MEINUNGSAUSTAUSCH (2016, directors: Sophie Linnenbaum and Sophia Bösch) premiered at the Berlinale and was honored as Short Tiger at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. Monday – A German Love Story (2017, directed by Sophie Linnenbaum) and RIEN NE VA PLUS (2017, directed by Sophie Linnenbaum) followed in the same year. PIX (2017, directed by Sophie Linnenbaum) was honored with the German Short Film Award. Her documentary VÄTER UNSER (2021, directed by Sophie Linnenbaum) portrays six people who talk openly about their fathers in just under 76 minutes. The film won several awards, including the FFF Promotion Prize at DOK.fest Munich and the Horizonte Film Prize at the Fünfseen Filmfest, and was honored as Best Documentary at the Biberach Film Festival, among others. Sophie Linnenbaum has been a member of the German Film Academy since fall 2022. Her work combines psychological depth with an experimental narrative approach, blurring the boundaries between documentary directness and poetic tension.
