Thomas Schubert, born on August 15, 1993, in Vienna, is an Austrian actor who became known through his authentic debut in the film Atmen (2011, directed by Karl Markovics). He played the lead role of Roman Kogler, a young prisoner who earns his freedom by working at a funeral home. For this extraordinary performance, Schubert received both the Best Actor Award at the Sarajevo Film Festival and the Austrian Film Award. In the artful film Asche (2024, directed by Elena Wolff), he plays the arrogant artist friend Simeon. In a dramatically intense scene, his character demands that the protagonist say that she belongs to him – a relentless, performance-like portrayal of toxic relationship patterns in the context of modern art. Thomas Schubert has since established himself through a variety of demanding roles in film and television. He appeared in Roter Himmel (2023, directed by Christian Petzold), in which he plays Leon, a young man whose summer is symbolically set on shaky ground due to forest fires. He had further film appearances in Atmen, Ein ganzes Leben and Axiom, while he has appeared in series such as King of Stonks, Freiheit ist das Einzigste, was zählt and Polizeiruf 110. Thomas Schubert's career combines an impressive range of introspective arthouse roles with accessible series characters – always carried by a strong screen presence and emotional depth.
