Wim Wenders

Wim Wenders is a German director, screenwriter, producer, and photographer who is considered one of the most important representatives of New German Cinema. Since the 1970s, his work has had a lasting impact on international cinema, combining visual power with existential themes in his films. In 1984, he achieved one of his greatest successes with “Paris, Texas.” The film won the Palme d'Or at Cannes and is considered a milestone in auteur cinema. He had already created a classic with The American Friend (1977), a dark thriller starring Dennis Hopper and Bruno Ganz. This was followed in 1987 by Wings of Desire, a poetic film about angels in Berlin that attracted worldwide attention. He later directed international productions such as Buena Vista Social Club (1999), which was nominated for an Oscar, and Pina (2011), a tribute to choreographer Pina Bausch, which also received an Oscar nomination. His more recent works include “Perfect Days” (2023), which won the Best Actor Award for Koji Yakusho at the Cannes Film Festival and was highly acclaimed internationally. In 2023, Wenders was also involved in the short film project A SENSE OF PLACE, which was presented at the Sheffield DocFest. This project brought together Iranian filmmakers, each of whom contributed their own perspectives on the theme of place identity. Wenders has received numerous awards for his life's work. In addition to the Palme d'Or at Cannes, he has been honored with the European Film Award for his lifetime achievement and has been nominated for an Oscar several times. In 2022, the European Film Academy honored his work with a special honorary award. With films such as “Paris, Texas,” “Wings of Desire,” “Buena Vista Social Club,” “Pina,” and the A SENSE OF PLACE project, Wim Wenders has proven that he is one of the most influential filmmakers of our time.
