An intimate look at three headstrong women who come from different parts of a country that no longer exists.
An intimate look at three headstrong women who come from different parts of a country that no longer exists.
Ruza left her homeland Serbia over 30 years ago and lives in Zurich. Her everyday life takes place in a meticulously constructed world, until Ana appears one day. Ana, the young woman from Sarajevo, is beautiful, hungry for life, somehow lost – and she upsets Ruza's firmly established order. A tender friendship develops between the two headstrong women.
Director Andrea Štaka takes an intimate look at three women in Switzerland who come from different parts of a country that no longer exists (the former Yugoslavia). FRAULEIN tells a story of uprooting and longing at a time when more and more people are moving between different cultures, religions, and countries, whether as travelers, displaced persons, or simply homeless.
The multi-award-winning feature film debut was honored with the Golden Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival in 2006. Further awards followed at the Sarajevo Film Festival (Heart of Sarajevo Award), the Festival des Films du Monde in Montreal, and the Swiss Film Award 2007 for best screenplay. Andrea Štaka, herself born in Switzerland but with roots in the former Yugoslavia, combines personal experience with precise characterization in her film. FRAULEIN was also screened at festivals in Gothenburg, Istanbul, Buenos Aires, and São Paulo and is still considered an important contribution to transcultural cinema.
