When a local fisherman claims to have seen a mermaid, tourists flock to the beach at Kiryat Yam, saving teenaged Lana from yet another boring summer.

Life seems to stand still in the Israeli coastal town of Kiryat Yam. Sixteen-year-old Lana, rebellious and longing for change, dreams of escaping her dreary everyday life. When a fisherman claims to have spotted a mermaid, the rumor spreads like wildfire. Tourists flock to the town, and Lana sees a chance to give her life a new direction.

The film VIRGINS is the feature film debut of Israeli director Keren Ben Rafael. The story is based on a real event: in 2009, an alleged mermaid sighting caused a stir in Kiryat Yam. Ben Rafael weaves this event into a coming-of-age story about hope, longing, and the desire for change.

The lead role of Lana is played by Joy Rieger, who has won several awards for her performance. The film premiered at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival and has been shown at the Jerusalem Film Festival and the Montenegro Film Festival, among others. VIRGINS received positive reviews for its sensitive direction and authentic portrayal of teenage insecurities.
