The Juntas Trial 1985: 90 days of testimony about torture, guilt and justice – now told for the first time in a complete documentary.

The Juntas Trial 1985: 90 days of testimony about torture, guilt and justice – now told for the first time in a complete documentary.

In Buenos Aires in 1985, a 90-day trial against the last military dictatorship took place, in which witness statements about cruel torture and immense pain formed the core. In a space where life and death are inextricably intertwined, the voices of the victims speak of a truth that has not been silenced, even decades later. The memories, once recorded on U-matic cassettes, form an archive that preserves the horror of the past and lays the foundation for a new beginning.

THE TRIAL (EL JUICIO) by Ulises de la Orden is the first cinematic attempt to exhaustively edit this extensive 530-hour archive. In 2013, the director embarked on an arduous search that took him across national borders – from the General Archive of the Argentine Nation to the Norwegian Parliamentary Archives. Despite numerous obstacles, he managed to reconstruct lost scenes and combine them with the latest 4K digitization.

THE TRIAL (EL JUICIO) celebrated its international premiere at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival. The documentary was shown worldwide, including at MoMA's Documentary Fortnigth in New York and Cinéma du réel Paris.
